Family Literacy Program

We believe in education, meeting the needs for family literacy is very important to The Hagerman Foundation.

We were pleased to learn of The Flint and Genesee Literacy Network and the work they had started to embrace literacy community wide. The Flint and Genesee Literacy Network currently consists of a variety of community partners and has launched an ongoing collaboration to align and improve literacy resources and services in Flint and Genesee County.

The Flint and Genesee Literacy Network launched a pilot program for Family Literacy at Flint’s Christ Enrichment Center. It’s primary goal: to assist parents as they prepare their children to be ready for school, while providing them with the tools and resources necessary for obtaining workforce and life goals. Together they work to provide family engagement throughout the program year, adult education achievement, and development on personal family goals through program participation. We were happy to award a grant to help fulfill their mission of embracing family learning.

“I’ve worked in Early Child Development for over 15 years. I’ve seen firsthand the impact that parents have on their child’s learning. We truly are our child’s first and most important teacher,” stated by Becky Foerster, Executive Director, The Hagerman Foundation. “I am thrilled to be teamed up with Christ Enrichment Center and the Flint and Genesee Literacy Network.”

Dianndra Davis spoke in regards to her experience with the Family Literacy Program and the impact it had on her life at The Summer Learning Professionals Conference.  She spoke of the life changing relationships that were created as well as the confidence she gained both as a parent and adult education student.
