Communities First

When Flint-based company, Communities First, Inc., creates development with the community in mind, they mean it. The husband-and-wife team of Glenn and Essence Wilson create affordable housing and so much more.

“At Communities First, we take a holistic approach to building sustainable communities,” said Glenn Wilson, president and CEO of Communities First. “By looking at systems and individuals as a whole and focusing on affordable housing, economic development, arts and culture outreach, and environmental education, we are impacting our community and changing lives.”

One of their holistic approaches to the community is Movies Under the Stars. This free summer outdoor movie series has been held at Atwood Stadium, Applewood Estates and behind City Hall. These events bring together a diverse group of people from all around Genesee County. Folks enjoy movies, games, activities, and snacks in a safe and family friendly environment.

Another Communities First project is restoring Flint’s former Swayze Apartments. Of the 36 units, 28 will be designated for permanent supportive housing for those with special needs, homeless individuals, or those at risk for homelessness. The remaining eight units will be available for those in Flint and surrounding communities.

The Hagerman Foundation is excited to join Communities First as they move Flint forward.
