The Flint & Genesee Literacy Network

It is our hope that through increased literacy, our community will change. Our vision is a community that embraces learning for both young and old, in and out of the classroom.

The Flint & Genesee Literacy Network works in partnership with the National Center for Families Learning, Parents as Teachers, Flint Community Schools, Genesee Intermediate School District, along with a variety of community partners. The Literacy Network is working to expand its Two-Generation/Family Literacy programs throughout Genesee County.

“Parents with limited literacy skills are less able to assist their children and a cycle of intergenerational low literacy is perpetuated,” said JaNel Jamerson, director of the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network.

We believe that by investing in parents, we can lift our children to a new level of learning. In 2016, the Hagerman Foundation supported a grant for the Literacy Network that launched a Family Literacy pilot program at the Christ Enrichment Center. The program helped several families prepare for their GED while also providing support for Parent Time and Parent and Child Time. At the close of the first year, Christ Enrichment Center celebrated the families enrolled in the pilot program. Many men and women spoke about feeling supported for the first time in their lives. Parents felt inspired and empowered.
